In the realm of postbirth experiences, the language we use holds a significant amount of power. It can shape the way new mothers perceive their journey, impacting their emotional well-being and overall experience. "Moms’ Words Matter: The Power of Postbirth Language" is an anthropological study that delves deep into the nuances of terms like ‘postpartum,’ ‘fourth trimester,’ and ‘postnatal’ and their effects on the lives of mothers.
This research project combines anthropological theories with data analysis from Reddit to provide an understanding of the impact language has with the postbirth experiences. This study examined the usage, topics, and connotations associated with the terms “postpartum,” “postnatal,” and “4th trimester” within 3 Reddit subgroups centered around the postbirth time period of motherhood. Fifty reddit posts and discussions from r/beyondthebump, r/NewParents, and r/Mommit were coded to analyze the term used, identify the patterns, themes, connotations, and content topics. The labels of content topics are: physical recovery, emotional challenges, bonding with baby, sleep deprivation, breastfeeding, body changes, relationship changes, identity shift, support systems, and medical concerns.
